What does iFSG mean?
The iTernity File System Gateway (iFSG) implements web service methods of the iCAS API and exposes this functionality as a virtual drive letter. This virtual drive - by default the Windows drive letter I: - shows up in Windows Explorer and can be written from random applications.
Data stored on the virtual drive can be archived directly after setting the “Read Only” flag (simulating the NetApp© Snap-Lock® mode) or when the specified policy kicks in. With the ”On Close” archive mode, data is archived as soon as the file is closed.
The default retention which is defined for the respective subfolder is used. The “On Close Plus” mode is similar to “On Close”, but allows versioning. When a file is modified, a new version of the file is created, keeping the original file in place.
The faster “On Policy” mode can be run in three different ways. The first possibility is to run in a “Read Only” mode, the second and third possibility is to archive based on the last modification date. In those cases, data is archived either immediately or one minute after the last modification. More detailed information can be found in our documentation.
In order to archive data, iFSG calls the API methods and thus acts as the client software.
